Beijing +30: Driving accountability to end violence against women and girls (CSW69 Side Event).

High-Level CSW69 Side Event of the Group of Friends for the elimination of violence against women and girls

The Group of Friends for the elimination of violence against women and girls was established in 2020 to promote efforts to address violence against women and girls in its many manifestations. It provides a platform to share lessons learned on efforts to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence, to improve cooperation, as well as to support advocacy initiatives and the mobilisation of additional resources. To date, the group includes 94 Member and Observer States from all regional groups.

On the occasion of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), the Group of Friends, in collaboration with the Spotlight Initiative and the UN Women-EU ACT to end violence against women and girls Programme, will organise a joint conversation to shed light on the urgent work still required to fulfil commitments made by member states under the Beijing Platform for Action 30 years ago to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls once and for all by 2030.

It seeks to:

  1. Take stock of progress made, key gaps and challenges that remain, and identify priority actions required to accelerate efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls.
  2. Centre the voices of civil society, women's rights organizations, and survivors to reflect on progress achieved and to identify the ambitious actions needed to address remaining gaps, 30 years after the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action.
  3. Explore what strengthened accountability for ending violence against women would look like and what it will take to end impunity and strengthen access to justice.
  4. Exchange experiences and good practices in the implementation of comprehensive whole of government National Action Plans (NAPs)/strategies to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls and mechanisms that are in place to monitor the implementation of NAPs.
  5. Advance discussions on how the UN and Member States can ensure sustained funding and resources to strengthen the implementation of commitments made under the Beijing Platform for Action to fulfil the goal of ending all forms of violence against women and girls by 2030.
