Focus on the situation of girls’ education in Afghanistan.




Three years after the de facto authorities took power, Afghanistan stands out as the only country in the world where secondary and higher education is strictly forbidden to girls and women. According to new UNESCO data published close to 1.4 million Afghan girls have been deliberately deprived of schooling.

Yasmine Sherif from Education Cannot Wait, a global fund for areas facing emergencies or crises, will be briefing reporters on the situation of girls’ education in Afghanistan at UN Headquarters in New York at 12:30 pm local time. Much has changed in the country since 2021, when the Taliban seized power. The rights of women and girls have been affected.
