Women's Strike, 50 years on - Icelandic Quest for Equality.


In this joint side event of the Government of Iceland and The Women's Year2025 we will discuss the milestones in the fight for equality and how the collaboration between the Icelandic government and the women's movement has been a transformative force in progressing gender equality.


We will contemplate on how the magic of women's solidarity can accelerate the goal towards equal rights for all, the challenges that face women and girls today, and the most important next steps.

Speakers: Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir, Minister of Justice, Sonja ÝrÞorbergsdóttir and Tatjana Latinović, organisers of the Women´s Strike 2023 and the Women´s year 2025.

The event will be moderated by ÞórunnSveinbjarnardóttir, Speaker of Althingi - the Icelandic Parliament.

By highlighting the role women play in feeding families , communities and the world, the World Food Programme (WFP) calls for more women and girls' empowerment . Gender equality is a must for a world of zero hunger , where all women, men, girls and boys can exercise their human rights, including the right to adequate food . According to WFP , 45 million people would have enough to eat by closing the gender gap on farm productivity .
