By highlighting the role women play in feeding families , communities and the world, the World Food Programme (WFP) calls for more women and girls' empowerment . Gender equality is a must for a world of zero hunger , where all women, men, girls and boys can exercise their human rights, including the right to adequate food . According to WFP , 45 million people would have enough to eat by closing the gender gap on farm productivity .

CSW 69 Side Event organized by FAO, IFPRI, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In the past fifteen years considerable progress has been made in measuring women's empowerment . The Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) , developed by IFPRI in 2010, and its adaptations have been used by 271 organizations in 63 countries. Building on the WEAI, IFPRI, Emory University and Oxford University worked in partnership with the World Bank on the development of a new metric for measuring women's empowerment: the Women's Empowerment Metric for National Statistical Systems (WEMNS) . Under the umbrella of the 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap , FAO contributes to the uptake of the metric integrating WEMNS in agricultural surveys of three partner countries: Sierra Leone, Liberia and Tanzania.
