Announcing the new UN commitment, the Gender Equality Clarion Call.
Addressing the audience in the General Assembly Hall, the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres warned that, whilst the movement towards gender equality has made great strides, there is still much more to do. The United Nations chief outlined the many positives, which include a greater number of girls in school and positions of power, but pointed out the fact that, every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by her partner or a family member and, at the current pace, eradicating extreme poverty for women and girls would take 130 years.
Mr. Guterres gave a deserved shoutout to the Spotlight Initiative, a joint UN and EU project, which is making real impact, enabling around a million more girls to stay in school, and helping to prevent 21 million women and girls from experiencing gender-based violence. The address included the announcement of a new UN commitment, the Gender Equality Clarion Call, described by Mr. Guterres as a “bold, urgent pledge to defend and advance the rights of all women and girls,” which is part of UN system-wide gender equality plan.
