Why Older women must not be left behind?

A United Nations regional body says that it has identified an oversight in the Beijing Declaration and Platform. According to UNECE, which work is to cover Europe, North America and Central Asia, the landmark accord overlooks older women, and the tendency for sexist attitudes and power imbalances that enable violence against women to become more pronounced with age. In the UNECE region, one in five women are aged 65 years or older and, by 2050, more than one-quarter of all women in the region will be in this age group: there will be more women aged 65 years or older than women under age 25. The Older women, says UNECE, are often lumped with caring for their own ageing parents or partners and grandchildren, significantly impacting their ability to participate in paid work. In the statement, the UN entity lays out recommendations to improve the situation for older women, such as policies to promote female participation in the labour force, reduce the gender pay gap, and improve the gender balance in unpaid care and domestic work.
